"Did they trash your office, or wherever it is you work?"
"Lou said the office is a mess. But nothing's ruined. He thought the thieves must have been searching for something. Then I surprised them and got a whack for my troubles."
"I don't like the sound of this. If they didn't find what they wanted, and they thought it important enough to break into your house and conk you over the head for it in the first place, they'll be back."
"Here we are." McCall pointed to a three-story gabled monstrosity on the right side of the street.
D.J. glanced upward, then back at McCall, her eyebrows raised, before she pulled over to the curb. "You live here?"
"Uh-huh. All my lifeexcept for a few years when I livedawell" He broke off and seemed to be searching for an explanation. His lips tightened a bit before he continued. "I lived somewhere else for a while. But I'm back to stay. This is the McCall family home."
